Doctor Gerard Furlong has had a brilliant career as an anaesthetist since graduating from St Bartholomew’s hospital college in 1992. His work has taken him to many locations around the UK and he is widely regarded as an expert in his field. Whilst he was studying at St Bartholomew’s Ged Furlong was a familiar sight on and around the campus as he was a keen sportsman who represented the college in several different sporting events.
He will tell you that his proudest moment at college was not graduating with full honours but the time he spent as captain of the college rowing team where they enjoyed a two year winning streak with Ged at the helm. The highlight of his time in charge of the rowing team was taking the trophy at the United Hospitals Head of the River and Regatta event where they fought off tough competition from colleges and university from the UK and Ireland. During his time at St Bartholomew’s Ged Furlong could also be spotted regularly turning out for the Veterans rugby side where his medical expertise was often called for when playing some of the tougher teams in the area. Not content with just rugby and rowing to fill his time up Ged was also a member of the college skiing team that successfully toured Tignes in 1991 and was also a keen member of the sailing club.
Despite the distractions of so much sporting success and the busy med school social whirl Ged graduated in 1992 and when on to specialise in anaesthesia as his chosen vocation. The Anaesthetist Gerard Furlong has worked in various locations in the UK since he graduated including a spell at Dunganon hospital in Northern Ireland during the time of the troubles where he treated the casualties from several high profile incidents.
He is acknowledged to be an expert within his chosen field and is an active member of several societies for whom he contributes articles and assists in research projects. He is currently a member of D.A.S (Difficult Airways Society) and also SCATA (Society for Computers and Technology in Anaesthesia).
